Seasonal Occurrence of Diseases in Cage‐Reared Channel Catfish, 1987–1991

Diagnostic records of the Southeastern Cooperative Fish Disease Project were used to determine the incidence of bacterial and parasitic diseases in cagecultured channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus . Laboratory submissions increased moderately from 1987 through 1990 and decreased in 1991. The proportion of diagnosed epizootics attributable to Edwardsiella ictaluri (enteric septicemia of catfish) decreased during this period, from 32% in 1987 to 10% in 1990 and 21% in 1991. Incidence of motile Aeromonas septicemia decreased from a high of 22% in 1987 to approximately 12% in 1991. Flexibacter ( Cytophaga ) columnaris was the cause of 12–23% of the diagnosed epizootics. Incidence of parasitic infestations of Ichthyobodo ( Costia ) necatrix decreased from 21 and 23% in 1988 and 1989, respectively, to 8% in 1991. Incidence of Henneguya infestations fluctuated between 7 and 14%, and Ichthyophthirius multifiliis outbreaks occurred only during 1987 and 1990. Severe anemia was diagnosed in 4% of the submitted cases during the study period. In 5% of all cases submitted between 1987 and 1991, no diagnosis could be made.
