Nonlethal surgical procedures were evaluated for the purpose of obtaining tissues for fish health inspections. Experimental treatments consisted of 25 fish each for liver biopsy, kidney biopsy, surgical incision only (no tissue biopsy), and anesthesia only. Survival at 180 d was considered excellent: only two deaths occurred in the kidney biopsy group and only one death occurred in the liver biopsy group. Although treatment‐associated lesions (adhesions and nephrocalcinosis) were found, none of the lesions were considered to have an adverse effect on reproductive capability of the fish.
