The location of the antigen binding site of a monoclonal antibody (MAb) against Ceratomyxa shasta was investigated by transmission electron microscopy with immunogold labeling techniques and by immunoenzymatic labeling of the parasite in histological sections. Specific binding by the MAb was observed in the cytoplasm of the primary (mother) cell. Labeled antibody was not observed in the cytoplasm of the developing secondary cells of the parasite nor in the nucleus of either the primary or secondary cells. Uses for this MAb in diagnostics and research are discussed.
