Neoplasms in Mummichogs from the Elizabeth River, Virginia

Because an estuarine mummichog Fundulus heteroclitus bearing an oral papilloma was found in a collection from a site heavily contaminated by polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in the Elizabeth River, six additional collections were made from July to October 1987. Altogether, 398 mummichogs were collected and necropsied. Tissues from 37 were processed histologically. Of the individuals necropsied, eight (2.0%) bore neoplastic lesions and eight had nonneoplastic lesions due, apparently, to injuries. Of the eight with neoplasms, six had incipient or mature papillomas of the lip and mouth area; these usually were mandibular. Two neoplasms in other body sites were diagnosed as an invasive schwannoma of the right pectoral fin and a capillarytype hemangioendothelioma of the left branchial chamber with gill complications.
