Mortality and growth rate following pectoral spine extraction from channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus were studied in a hatchery pond experiment. No mortality resulted from spine extraction in either of two trials. There appeared to be a slight retardation in growth of channel catfish with extracted spines in both trials; however, their growth was not significantly different from growth of the control group. Wounds caused by spine extraction healed more quickly at high water temperatures and there was no infection.
