Recreational fishery management is a complex and challenging task that requires both biological and behavioral data. In this study, I examined bank‐ and float‐angler perceptions of use levels and satisfaction on the Madison River, Montana, and outlined a methodological approach for estimating angler‐defined sociological carrying capacity. Estimates of this carrying capacity were derived from a comparison of angler expectations and desires for observing other anglers, and approximated an acceptable range of observations rather than a single, absolute number. Results suggested that the methodology has the potential to provide behavioral information for inclusion into the fishery management process.
