More than 42,000 adult and juvenile pink shrimp (Penaeus duorarum) were tagged and released on the Tortugas (Florida) fishing grounds in 1982‐1983 in order to study shrimp movement in relation to the Tortugas sanctuary. For the first time, returns per unit of effort were used in addition to conventional vector analysis to indicate the direction of shrimp movement. Many pink shrimp migrated north and west from the sanctuary to recruit to the fishery. Results supported the historical movement patterns that formed the basis for the establishment of the sanctuary.
