Juvenile 1977‐brood coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) were released from Big Creek Hatchery in Oregon as subyearlings (age 0) in July 1978 and yearlings (age 1) in May and July 1979. Also, 1978‐brood coho salmon were released at age 0 in July 1979 and at age 1 in May and July 1980. Age‐0 fish matured 1 year earlier than age‐1 fish. More adult fish returned to the hatchery from all juvenile fish released in July than from age‐1 fish released in May. In the one case where fish from both year classes were released about the same time, the adult return from age‐0 fish was greater than that from age‐1 fish. Adult coho salmon from juveniles released in May were larger than adults from juveniles released in July. Our results suggested that age‐0 coho salmon reared under an accelerated growth program and released from Big Creek Hatchery in July may produce greater adult returns to the hatchery than the usual releases of age‐1 fish in May.
