Abstract Fish standing crops were compared in wooded and nonwooded coves of seven Kansas reservoirs over a period of years. Species that concentrated around the standing timber included sunfishes (Lepomis spp.), crappies (Pomoxis spp.), freshwater drum (Aplodinotus grunniens), buffaloes (Ictiobus spp.), river carpsucker (Carpiodes carpio), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Three open‐water species, white bass (Morone chrysops), gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), and walleye (Stizostedion vitreum), showed little attraction to areas containing standing timber. Standing crop estimates of minnows (Cyprinidae) were nearly the same in wooded and nonwooded coves.
