The paper presents examples of circatidal rhythms in fishes, reviews the evidence for hydrostatic pressure as a synchroniser for these rhythms, and demonstrates that fish are capable of detecting and responding to slow cyclic pressure changes whose amplitude and duration are similar to those of natural tidal cycles.
