Transient increases in plasma thyroxine (T 4 ) concentrations and gill sodium‐potassium‐dependent adenosine triphosphatase ([Na+K]‐ATPase) activity in captive alevins and young juveniles of pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha occurred during the period when development of salinity tolerance and seaward migration is observed. Plasma triiodothyronine (T 3 ) concentration generally decreased during this time. Maximal values of plasma T 4 concentration and gill (Na+K)‐ATPase activity coincided with complete absorption of the yolk sac and final differentiation of the abdominal body wall. These findings suggest that a process similar to the smolt transformation of congeneric species may occur in juvenile pink salmon prior to seawater entry.
