Breeding and rearing experiments were conducted to determine whether or not temperature differentials during development affected the lateral‐line scale number of the central stoneroller Campostoma anomalum. The progeny of four parental crosses were incubated and reared each at three temperatures (13.9 C, 17.7 C, and 24.3 C). Central stonerollers incubated and reared at the lowest temperature had significantly more scales in the lateral‐line series than those of the same crosses incubated and reared at the highest temperature (mean = 47.6 and 44.7, respectively).
