Water resources of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area in central Arizona have changed from a desert river and high groundwaters to a dry river bed and a depressed water table. Surface waters are almost entirely man‐made canals. As habitats have been changed, so has the fish fanna. An historic assemblage of 15 native species has declined to 4, and 29 introduced forms have been recorded. Canal habitats represent a potentially significant recreational resource that contain substantial populations of desirable game fishes. A history of change in the fishes of the area provides insights into the management problems that are likely to be confronted as resources undergo future development.
