Blueback herring (Alosa aestivalis) comprised 79%, alewife (A. pseudoharengus) 16%, and American shad (A. sapidissima) 4% of the juvenile Alosa taken in 221 bottom trawl collections made during December‐April from 1972 to 1975 in coastal, southern New Jersey waters. Most of these fishes were less than 100–120 mm FL. All three species were most numerous in March. Coastal waters out to at least 8 km offshore provide a continuum of estuarine conditions favorable for overwintering by these fishes.
