A paper fastener on the left operculum of alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) proved to be superior as an easily recognized mark when compared to a paper fastener on the left pectoral fin and an alligator clip on the dorsal fin in a combined experimental approach employing a field and a controlled test. In the field test, fish marked on the operculum gave a significantly greater number of recoveries, while in the controlled test, the operculum treatment showed a significantly lower mortality rate than the two other marks. The results indicate that fins may be less desirable than the operculum as sites for the placement of tags on alewives.
