Examination of young‐of‐the‐year and adult yellow bass stomachs from Clear Lake, Iowa revealed that competition for food, if present during the 1967 growing season, was centered on utilization of Daphnia pulex. Heavy predation by parent bass on their offspring during late summer and autumn was attributed to smaller‐than average young bass in 1967, but predation by adults during this period might be a frequent factor affecting year‐class strength.
