The classification and study of evolutionary relationships of salmonid fishes have produced a large amount of classical systematic literature; however, many problems remain unresolved. A review of salmonid relationships based on orthodox systematic study reveals opportunities for cytogenetics and biochemical systematics to contribute information necessary for solving specific problems. Certain systematic problems of the genera Salmo and Coregonus are explored to focus attention on the limitations of traditional systematic investigations for an understanding of certain evolutionary events which have long confounded taxonomists.
