Polyacrylamide gel electropherograms of the sera of 13 Ictalurids and one Ariid were compared with that of human serum. Electrophoresis was combined with precipitation to identify albumins and globulins, and with differential staining to identify lipoproteins, glycoproteins, cytochrome oxidase, and haptoglobins. Parallel electrophoresis of serum and plasma from the same individual fishes was used to locate fibrinogen. Albumins and globulins were present in all catfish sera. The electrophoretic patterns of the ictalurids were quite similar to one another and to the serum pattern of the Ariid although the latter was still distinctive. Catfish serum patterns are unlike that of human serum. Human albumin migrates more rapidly, but it is chemically similar to one of the albumins of catfish in being composed of both lipoprotein, glycoprotein, and having cytochrome oxidase activity. Human and catfish albumin evidently differ in their nonspecific binding abilities. Human and catfish sera differ in their relative amounts of glycoproteins, carbohydrate moieties being present in all human serum fractions but only in two fractions of catfish sera. Human and ictalurid fibrinogen have similar electrophoretic mobilities. There are lipoprotein fractions, which may be beta‐lipoprotein, of very low mobility in both human and catfish sera. Haptoglobins do not occur in catfish sera.
