Methods of age and growth analysis of winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), in Rhode Island were investigated. The results indicated that age determinations from scale markings were unsatisfactory, and that fully reliable estimates from otoliths could be obtained only to age III. Modifications of Walford growth lines were used to describe growth in two populations of flounder. Estimates of total annual mortality were derived from age‐frequency distributions for each sex and stock.
