Failure to form annuli in certain years was noted in the analysis of age and growth data for yellow bass collected from Clear Lake, Iowa, from 1952 through 1959, when the yellow bass were slow‐growing. Lack of fish in the 1950 and 1951 year classes permitted detection of the failure of the abundant 1949 year‐class fish to form annuli in 1955, 1956, 1957, and 1958. The 1946, 1948, and 1952 year classes also were shown to have missed annulus formation in some of the same years. The fourth annulus of the 1952 year class was not formed until late 1956 or early 1957, and age VI yellow bass of this year class showed only four annuli. Many scales also showed lateral resorption in 1956‐58. Failure of annulus formation in slow‐growing fish of several species is believed to be more common than reported, but difficult to detect. Finding of age IX yellow bass (with five annuli, however) extends the known life span of this species.
