Statistical methods for determining errors associated with means and medians of series of catches in stationary nets are discussed and two suggested methods presented: a parametric method based on the negative binomial distribution and a non‐parametric method using sequential ranking of values around the median. It is concluded that the former is most useful from the viewpoint of mathematical description, and the latter is of greatest value where the number of net sets is small and fish of a particular kind are taken in most of the sets.
