Waters on Indian lands have been generally unavailable to the public for sport fishing in the Southwest. The Indian tribes that have jurisdiction over tribal lands and waters are recognizing the economic value and employment potential to be derived from sport fishery resources. Programs are now being formulated in cooperation with the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop these fisheries. Tribal funds are being used to develop fishing waters and facilities for the use of the public. Some problems encountered in developing sport fisheries on Indian lands are discussed. A successful program on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation is described.
