Fishery products continue to improve in quality and variety, but the commercial fisheries face serious economic difficulties. The catch in 1957 declined 10 percent in volume and 5 percent in value from the preceding year, but U. S. per capita consumption remained at about 10 pounds, the demand being supplied by increasing imports. Varying conditions in the several sections of the wide‐spread fisheries are discussed and governmental programs of aid in technical and economic fields are mentioned.
