Israel has established fish farming with carp as the principal species. It is a successful agricultural practice because production is good and land otherwise useless is employed. Fish ponds are fertilized and fish are also fed directly with oil cake, lupin seeds, and grain husks. Production is as high as 1,750 kilograms per hectare. Research in progress and general operation of ponds is described.
