In 25 laboratory experiments wood yeast Torula utilis combined with commercial fertilizer produced from one‐third more to double the phytoplankton growth produced by commercial fertilizer alone. Furthermore, this crop was produced in less time than that required by commercial fertilizer and was sustained for a longer period. Filamentous algae did not appear in any of the tanks fertilized with wood yeast or with a combination of yeast and fertilizer but did appear in tanks fertilized with commercial fertilizer alone and in the unfertilized tanks. Oxygen depletion was noted following fertilization with wood yeast but this may not be a serious disadvantage in pond fertilization provided the yeast is applied in small amounts or to only a portion of the pond at one time.
