A peculiar carp, (Cyprinus carpio), was caught in the upper Illinois river. The fish was 7 years old and had a total length of 9 inches as compared to 20 inches for a normal carp of like age. The last 8 thoracic and the 17 caudal vertebrae had been softened and squeezed together, and ossification and the formation of new bone had caused permanent fusion. The condition has been named Spondylitis ossificans piscium and bears a marked resemblance to Arthritis deformans. Possible causes of the condition are discussed.
