The eastern brook trout was first planted in the Maligne River System in 1928. The success of the introduction was phenomenal and these waters, previously barren of fish, were opened to angling in 1932. Frown 1933 to 1937 the population suffered a severe decline in size and condition. During the past 3 years the fish have recovered their condition and their average size is increasing steadily. Three problems of fish culture and management have arisen in the development of angling in this area. The choice of the brook trout, an “exotic” species, appears to have been justified. The lack of intervention when the fish began to degenerate has also been vindicated by the natural recovery of the population. A new problem in management has appeared in the sudden and unexplained decrease in the number of fish caught during the past 2 years.
