Four hundred seventy‐six fisheries projects contained in the Current Research Information System for the 5‐year period 1979–84 were analyzed by USDA geographic region, habitat or culture system, type of study and biological group. Federal funds supported 68% of projects in the southern region whereas state funds supported approximately 50% of projects in other regions. Federal support of aquaculture and the large number of aquaculture projects in southern states accounts for much of this difference. State‐funded projects were more evenly distributed across habitat types and were more ecological in orientation. Federally supported projects were more biologically and economically oriented. Seventy‐five percent of all projects addressed finfish. There is an obvious though not absolute distinction between state and federally funded projects.
