A prey‐dependent recruitment model is depicted that relates recruitment of largemouth bass at age 1 + to the availability of small‐sized bluegills as prey throughout the summer. These concepts were developed by comparing the dynamics of growth and recruitment of young‐of‐the‐year largemouth bass and their prey in fertilized farm ponds, public fishing lakes, and a mainstream reservoir in Southeastern United States. The model suggests that management strategy for systems with diverse and possibly competing species hinges on being able to maintain adequate size structure within populations through bass predation so that each species reproduces periodically and a sufficient number survive and grow rapidly.
