The newly published Environmental Atlas of the Potomac Estuary is an innovative scientific and artistic endeavor that presents the overall characteristics of this estuarine system in an integrated manner while preserving quantitative details about biotic and abiotic aspects of the system. This article, although it cannot do justice in describing the richly illustrated, full‐color book, gives some background on the Atlas development and illustrates some of the graphic and mapping techniques designed to convey information readily to both lay and technical readers. The book presents site‐specific and regional data and also provides generalized discussions of estuarine ecosystems that can be broadly applied to similar systems.
