This article will address the risk management issues surrounding a pre‐existing pregnancy at the time of female sterilisation. It will concentrate on risk avoidance through counselling and issues of consent, as well as illustrating a number of important precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk of complications occurring. The investigation and analysis of confirmed pregnancies and those at risk of a pre‐existing pregnancy will also be discussed. Good practice, careful documentation and adherence to guidelines by healthcare professionals may help reduce the large number of medico‐legal claims arising from female sterilisation.
