Surgery to create a vagina has been performed for several hundred years and many techniques are currently in use including the nonsurgical method of dilatation. New laparoscopic techniques may soon replace the more traditional surgery, however none has been fully evaluated in terms of anatomical, sexual or psychological outcomes or risk of complications. This review describes the conditions where vaginoplasty is indicated and the current techniques used for vaginal enlargement including vaginal dilatation. Brief summaries of the literature on outcomes and discussion of the current controversies over vaginoplasty indications and timing are included.
