Hysteroscopy (direct endoscopic visualisation of the endometrial cavity) is considered a safe and acceptable procedure and it is used extensively in Europe and North America for the evaluation of uterine bleeding disorders. Technological advances in instrumentation have allowed hysteroscopy to be performed in an outpatient setting, increasing its use in gynaecological practice. However, the role of outpatient hysteroscopy in the diagnosis of intrauterine structural pathology and serious endometrial diseases like cancer and hyperplasia is still debated. More recently, hysteroscopic surgical interventions have become feasible in the outpatient setting. This review explores these issues and outlines the current state of the art.
