Obstetric fistulae most commonly occur in the developing world. Usually the result of prolonged obstructed labour, they are more often found in young primigravid women. The majority of obstetric fistulae are preventable by ensuring that women are able to access appropriate hospital care. This article highlights some of the important factors in the diagnosis and treatment of fistulae and the management of fistula patients in the developing world.
