lthough good sutures cannot make up for poor surgery, poor sutures can let down a good surgeon. A Until 1970, only naturally occurring suture materials, such as catgut, silk and cotton, were available. The first synthetic absorbable suture (DexonTM) was introduced in 1970; since then, synthetic absorbable materials have replaced natural substances. This article looks at the choice of suture material that is available to the present-day gynaecologist.
