CONCRETIZATION AND GENERALIZATION IN THE RANGE OF TRANSLATION TRANSFORMATIONS

The article deals with the problem of determining the place of concretization and generalization among other translational transformations and the description of the lingualcategories underlying these transformations. The relevance of the topic is determined by the constant expansion of various international contacts (scientific, technical, tourist, cultural, etc.), which require refinement of translation techniques, a conscious approach to the use of those or other translational transformations, among which concretization and generalization are very important. The purpose of the article is to determine the lingual basis of the use of concretization and generalization on the material of a story by Terry Pratchett’s To achieve this goal, tasks such as the analysis and synthesis of theoretical developments in translation theory regarding translation transformations have been accomplished, and relevant factual material has been analyzed and classified. In the text of the story, 106 cases of use of concretization or generalization were found (63 and 43 examples respectively). It is concluded that generalization and concretization are widely used when translating any text. Concretization can be considered more common among them; it occurs when translating desemantic lexical units, polysemantic words, etc. The most common words in this case are verbs and nouns (have, get, take, go, point, stuff, etc.). The appropriateness of using generalization is largely determined by the difference in word compatibility in English and other languages. We see the prospects for further research in a more detailed analysis of the relationship between different types of lexical transformations.
