The quantitative composition of the nobility of the Left-Bank Ukraine in the middle of the XIX century on the basis of published documents is being considered. In most cases, the source material for the calculation of the number of nobility were genealogical books, the terms of which were not limited. The main reasons for the differences in determining the number of nobles that exist in historiography are: the lack of a single well-organized population accounting system, different approaches to calculations, unreliability of data from the counties, negligence in genealogical books keeping, bureaucratic retrenchment, etc. The data of various statistical sources is analyzed, namely the materials of the Memorial books of Chernihiv (1862) and Poltava (1865) provinces. The presence of technical errors in the Memorial books has been identified. The calculations of the number of personal and hereditary nobles of the Poltava and Chernihiv provinces have been made. It is determined that the number of personal nobles in both provinces was greater than hereditary, while in general in the Russian Empire the hereditary nobility prevailed. The percentage of hereditary and personal nobles in both provinces was almost identical, which suggests similar conditions for the formation and existence of the nobility of the Left-Bank Ukraine in the middle of the nineteenth century. The quantitative composition of the nobility of the Left-Bank Ukraine according to the gender index is analyzed.
