
ZOO MANAGEMENT WITH SUSTAINABLE TOURISM PRINCIPLE FOR THE ANIMAL WELFARE

Zoological garden is a zoo requiring nurturing and proliferating attempt over the types of animals maintained based on animal welfare ethics and norms as the means of protecting and conserving species and utilized as educational, research, science and technology development as well as health recreation media. This research aimed to study the management of zoo in Surakarta called Taman Satwa Taru Jurug (Taru Jurug Zoo). The methods employed used was exploratory qualitative were observation, in-depth interview, and Focus Group Discussion. The result of research showed that the management of Zoo in Surakarta or Taru Jurug Zoostill belonged to poor category because it had not applied The Five Freedoms yet to support sustainable tourism particularly to bring animal welfare into reality. For that reason, a variety of attempts should be taken to realize the management of zoo with a sustainable tourism principle for animal welfare. The first attempt was to give the visitors and the zoo officer aneducation about animal welfare using enrichment method and environment (infrastructure) enrichment.The second one was to develop the regulation related toanimal welfare.
