Romanian visual anthropology emerged in the early 1990s out of the film studio of the Astra Museum. Collaborations with the Sibiu Center lead to the establishing of the Astra Film Fest. This center produces its own films, organizes summer schools, and manages a documentary film collection with public screening facilities. The mission of the Astra Film Fest is to present the current practice of visual anthropology and its productions in Eastern Europe. The article details the history of this festival, in addition to the major themes and styles of its films.
