Ever since the inception of what one may describe as visual anthropology in the Nordic countries, there has been a strong emphasis on bridging the gap between the “re‐presenter” and the “represented.” Covering the years from the mid‐1970s until today, this article explores the emergence of visual anthropology through the Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA) and later developments in which training in ethnographic film became institutionalized. Finally, it discusses ways in which ethnographic film was used in two anthropological research projects in the Pacific, in both cases based on profound cooperation with the local communities.
