A critical, interpretive reading of Francis Ford Coppola's 1974 film The Conversation is offered. As an example of reflexive cinema, this film unravels the ideological arguments that support the investigative‐voyeuristic gaze, whether that is the gaze of the ethnographer, the sociologist, or the wiretap expert. The relationships between sociological, ethnographic and cinematic realism are examined. The need for greater reflexivity in our sociological–investigative practices is suggested.
