This commentary uses ethnographic data on lowincome African American youth and their families to expand on theoretical discussions of resilience. Substantive findings are presented to highlight the impact of environmental conditions and family characteristics on specific processes. The discussion further considers the methodological contributions of ethnographic research for generating key insights on youth resilience.
