The "city as context" offers a useful way to talk about connections (actual and potential) between urban history and urban anthropology in the study of immigrants. Several varying characteristics of cities, as they influence the insertion and incorporation of immigrants are explored. These include the historical depth of immigration in particular cities, the presence or absence of residentially‐segregated immigrant receiving areas, the nature of the immigrant labor market (including enclave economies), and a dominant set of values (an urban ethos) shaping economic and institutional life in a given city.
