METROPOLITAN SPACES is a set of essays each concerned with how, and under what circumstances, people living in the same city come to see themselves as sharing an identity. For contemporary city dwellers, forging a link between who they are and where they live is increasingly problematic because of the rapid changes in place and self in the metropolis. All of the papers focus on Vienna or Berlin, but as case studies, they offer insights into the processes of identity formation for other cities as well.
