THIS PAPER CONCERNS the relationships between and among mental illness, criminality, medicine and law, when each becomes, both separately and as one manifestation, radically transformed by differing needs to assess responsibility and construct comprehensibility. The work of forensic psychiatry deals with these needs, and encompasses professional, moral, and social concerns which inform them. The boundary between law and medicine creates a unique terrain. The formidable institutions of law and medicine gaze intently at people in this situation. Members of this population— forensic patients—are objectified in particular ways, and questions of public and private become paramount.
