THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES the importance of ideology in the political culture of a traditionally Labour‐controlled borough in the East End of London. The concepts of folk and elite ideology are used to explain the divergence between voter values and the elite political culture of the Labour Party in local council elections. Local–level ethnography of the political culture of the London borough of Thameside is used to illustrate the divergence between the Labour Party elite and the political community. A call is made for the ethnography of locallevel politics in urban micro–environments to examine issues of ideology and political legitimacy, [political culture, folk values, elite ideology, British Labour Party]
