In this article the function of propertylike information in stateless societies is analyzed. The first section of the article examines recent studies that conceptualize propertylike information and considers the relationship between propertylike information and educational and political processes. Examples of information possession and transmission in contemporary state societies are then presented to further elicidate the conceptualization. These introductory materials provide a conceptual framework for the analysis of propertylike information in stateless societies that follows in the second section of the paper.
