Lithic and Organic Hunting Technology in the French Upper Palaeolithic

The application of multivariate statistical techniques to the analysis of lithic and organic (bone, antler, and ivory) weapon armatures from the French Upper Palaeolithic has demonstrated that the traditional typological classification systems are underlain by broad, morpho‐functional classes of artifacts which transcend cultural and temporal boundaries. These morpho‐functional classes enable the examination of isochrestic variability in hunting technology across time and space. Further analysis suggests that morphofunctionaJ classes are related to other aspects of hunting, including the exploitation of preferred prey species and the use of appropriate hunting strategies and techniques.
