This chapter explores the relationship between social imagery and observation in archeology. Several examples are provided which indicate that what archeologists “see” in/as the archeological record is more closely linked to shifting fashions in their own cultural contexts than generally imagined. If correct, this raises interesting questions concerning the nature of knowledge in archeology.
