This is a short story about four young women who went to work in the Mexicali foreign‐owned assembly plants (maquiladora), told from the point of view of one of them. Two are composite characters; all live in the colonia (district), I call “Colonia Popular.” Their stories are not untypical of the young maquiladora workers along the northern Mexican border. The phenomena of relatives networking each other into work sites is also common. Despite the examples of unhappy marriages and abusive men surrounding them, the young women in the colonia still hope one day to find a true love, a responsible man who will give them affection and take care of them.
